AI voice solutions for insurance policy renewal calls in India

AI voice solutions for insurance renewal calls are voice agents that phone policyholders before a premium falls due, remind them of the date in English, Hindi or Hinglish, confirm whether they intend to renew, send a WhatsApp follow-up and pass anyone with product, claim or payment questions to a licensed advisor. In India they must run on compliant numbers (TRAI’s 1600 series for IRDAI-regulated service calls), never collect OTPs, and never give policy advice.

Why renewal calls matter so much

A missed renewal is not just lost commission. For the policyholder it can mean lost benefits or, in motor insurance, breaking the law:

  • Health insurance. IRDAI’s May 2024 master circular sets a grace period of 15 days for monthly instalments and 30 days for quarterly, half-yearly or annual premiums. Renewing within the grace period protects accrued credits such as no-claim bonus and waiting periods.
  • Motor insurance. Section 146 of the Motor Vehicles Act makes third-party cover compulsory. PIB notes that driving uninsured can mean up to three months’ imprisonment or a ₹2,000 fine for a first offence.
  • Life insurance. Lapsed policies can lose cover until revived, which is a conversation a customer should have with an advisor, not a bot.

In short, a well-timed reminder is a real service to the customer. The problem is scale: an agency with a few thousand policies has renewals falling due every single day, and a small team cannot call everyone, twice, at the right time.

What an AI voice agent does in a renewal cycle

Every outcome (renewing, needs advisor, wants to switch, wrong number) is written to your CRM or sheet so the team works from one list.

The compliance lines you cannot cross

1. The right number series

TRAI’s February 2025 amendments to the TCCCPR keep the 140 series for promotional calls and designate the 1600 series for service and transactional calls. In December 2025 TRAI directed that all IRDAI-regulated entities complete adoption of the 1600 series by 15 February 2026, and said such entities may not make service or transactional calls from other numbers after that date. Agencies should confirm with their insurer and telecom provider how this applies to calls made on the insurer’s behalf.

2. Consent and opt-out

The same amendments tighten consent: implicit consent for service calls lasts only for the duration of the contract, and opt-outs must be respected. A renewal reminder to an active policyholder is very different from cold-calling a lapsed one with a new offer.

3. WhatsApp template categories

Meta’s template guidelines say account alerts must not “attempt to secure renewals”, and list renewal pushes under marketing. A neutral due-date notice for an existing policy can be a utility message; anything persuasive (“renew today and save”) is marketing and needs marketing opt-in. We write renewal templates to stay on the right side of that line.

4. No OTPs, no advice

Impersonation fraud is exactly why these rules exist. Vocora’s insurance scripts never ask for OTPs, PINs, card numbers or Aadhaar, and never recommend a product or promise a claim outcome. That is also how we describe it on our insurance industry page.

Why voice and not just SMS or email

SMS and email reminders are cheap and easy to ignore. A short call in the language the customer prefers gets an actual answer: yes, no, or “call me after salary day.” That answer is what your team needs to plan its day. WhatsApp then gives the customer something durable to refer back to, as long as the template is categorised correctly.

Language matters here more than almost anywhere else. Policyholders in Tier-2 and Tier-3 towns often prefer Hindi or Hinglish; we explain why in Hinglish Voice AI vs IVR.

A sample renewal reminder script

Illustrative, not a real customer call:

  • Agent: “Namaste, this is a reminder call on behalf of your insurance advisor. Aapki health policy ka premium 12 tarikh ko due hai. Kya aap renew karna chahenge?”
  • Customer: “Haan, but I want to increase the cover.”
  • Agent: “Sure. Cover changes our advisor will explain. Kal 11 baje ya 5 baje, which time suits you for a callback?”
  • Customer: “5 baje.”
  • Agent: “Done. I’ve sent the details on WhatsApp. Please never share an OTP with anyone who calls you.”

The same desk also answers inbound calls on your agency helpline, so customers who call back after a reminder reach someone immediately. Agencies that run renewals out of an ERP or policy admin system can trigger reminders automatically with WhatsApp ERP automation. Related reading: financial services and AI vs human receptionist.

What to measure in the first renewal cycle

  • Share of due policies the team actually reached before the due date
  • Customers who confirmed renewal, asked for an advisor, or said no
  • Renewals completed inside the grace period after a reminder
  • Opt-outs and complaints, which should stay close to zero with good scripts

Compare these against your previous manual cycle, not against a vendor’s promise. That is the only number that matters for your book.

FAQ

Can an AI voice agent make insurance renewal reminder calls?

Yes. It can remind policyholders of an upcoming due date, confirm whether they plan to renew, answer simple process questions, send a WhatsApp follow-up and route anyone with product or claim questions to a licensed advisor.

Which number series must insurance renewal calls use?

TRAI directed all IRDAI-regulated entities to adopt the 1600 series for service and transactional calls by 15 February 2026. Promotional calls use the 140 series. Agencies and intermediaries should confirm their own obligations with their insurer and telecom provider.

Will the AI give policy advice?

No. Vocora’s insurance scripts do not recommend products, compare plans or promise claim outcomes. Those conversations go to a person.

Does the AI collect payments or OTPs?

No. It never asks for OTPs, PINs, card numbers or Aadhaar on a call or chat. It can share your official payment link or branch details that you approve.

Can renewal calls be in Hindi or regional languages?

Vocora calls in English, Hindi or Hinglish from day one. Other languages can be scoped after the first script is live.

Is this for insurers or agencies?

Both, but most of our conversations are with agencies, brokers and POSP-led teams that manage renewal books on spreadsheets and personal phones.
